For Longtime Starlight volunteers, a national honor shines

When she was invited to volunteer on the Women’s Committee at Starlight Theatre in 1969, Jan Morevitska accepted the offer for a single reason. “I’ve just always loved theater — we’ve just always loved theater,” she said. Jan grins at Lee, her husband of 52 years, stirs her coffee and professes, “Starlight was my first love.” After more than 40 years of volunteering at Starlight, the Morevitskas, who live in Overland Park, were honored this summer with the 2011 Star of Touring Broadway Award by the New York-based Broadway League.

On the opening night of Mamma Mia!, playing at Starlight Theatre in Swope Park, I was transported. Not to a Greek isle, mind you, but to my college dorm room, listening to my roommate play ABBA’s Greatest Hits on repeat. When Damon Runyon died in 1946, his lasting legacy, the Broadway musical “Guys and Dolls,” was still four years away from opening night. Review: Huey Lewis & the News

This show lasted nearly two hours and it was delivered in two parts, and both were steeped in the past.

Huey Lewis is a pop star who has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. His most popular was “Sports,” which has topped the 7 million mark in the U.S. alone. It’s one of those heyday albums that birthed five Top 20 singles. Its successor, “Fore!” fared well, too: four more Top 20 songs.

On Thursday, June 9, actor Lou Diamond Phillips visited Mattie Rhodes Center, one of Kansas City’s oldest nonprofit institutions. Review | Starlight's The King and I is a fittingly regal musical

The big Starlight Theatre stage is the ideal place for pageantry. And pageantry is what “The King and I” is all about.
Don’t get me wrong. This is a true Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. Richard Rodgers wrote some of his best music for this show, and the dramatic narrative and pungent lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II give the show emotional depth.
